Soul Level is a General Stat in Demon's Souls and Demon's Souls Remake. Your Soul Level equals the sum of your attributes (Strength, Vitality etc.) minus 80. Soul Level increases your Physical Defense, Magic Defense and Fire Defense. Soul Level also determines the level range from which Blue Phantoms and Black Phantoms can be summoned.

Each time the player increases its Soul Level (Level Up), 1 Attribute point is granted to be assigned as the player sees fit.

Each Attribute can be increased to a Maximum of 99, making the maximum Soul Level 712 with all Attributes Maxed Out.

Soul Level in Demons Souls

How to Level Up

In order to level stats in a new game, you must first defeat Phalanx and talk to The Monumental. Then, to spend your souls (Exp. Points) and level up, you need to talk to The Maiden in Black. You cannot upgrade stats until you have beaten the boss of Boletarian Palace Phalanx. Don't worry about accidentally attacking the Maiden - she'll never become hostile, and, after a short delay, comes back to life when killed.

 Leveling Up Cost

The cost of raising a Level increases as your character's level increases. The amount of souls each level costs is the same for all classes, though classes begin at different levels. For example, a character that starts at level 1 may find leveling up to be extremely affordable, but the character who starts at level 10 didn't have to pay anything to get to that point. When the level 1 character reaches level 10, going from 10 to level 11 will cost exactly the same amount of souls as it would for the character who started at level 10. Because of this, starting at a lower level actually ends up costing more overall, however the player will be able to put their stats exactly where they want them instead of starting with a more pre-determined kit.

Where to Find The Maiden in Black

The Maiden in Black can be found at The Nexus. She moves around a bit, but is always visible near the archstones. The places she can be found are:

  • Sitting next to the last Archstone you entered
  • Standing directly next to Stockpile Thomas
  • Standing between Blacksmith Boldwin and the Archstone for Boletarian Palace
  • Sitting against a column across the hall from Stockpile Thomas, towards the Valley of Defilement
  • Standing at the edge of the transparent seal in the center floor
  • Beside the small statue where you re-appear when you die in The Nexus.
  • Standing in the center of the stairs leading down to the area with dozens of messages.

De-levelling Stats

The only way to delevel a character's stats is to decrease the overall Soul Level, and then build back the relevant stats, as desired.
The stat that loses a point when de-leveling is whichever stat has the largest difference over the starting stat for that class of character. If there is more then one stat with the same difference from the starting stat, they will decrease in the order in which they are listed.

The vitality stat cannot be lowered. For example: A Knight with 15 Strength and 10 Luck will lose 2 points of Luck before losing any Strength since his Strength is only 1 point above the starting Strength while his Luck is 3 points above the starting Luck for that class. Also if the Knight  has another stat such as Magic  that is also 3 points above, the Magic will decrease before the Luck because it is higher up on the descending stat list.
There is absolutely no way to purposefully delevel a specific stat. Also, there is no way to delevel a character's stats below the starting levels for that character's class.

Maximum Stats

The highest level for any single stat is 99, making the highest possible Soul Level 712, with all individual stats at 99. The maximum is far beyond what's needed to complete three-and-a-half playthroughs and earn the Platinum trophy, and few players will reach Soul Level 712 through normal farming.
Maxing out one's stats does not give a player any unfair advantage over other players, because of the game's online Soul Level range restrictions. Prior to Patch 1.03 for the three Asian versions, a glitch allowed for the duplication of souls between two characters within the same player account, so that a player quickly (in about 1.5 hours, starting with 1,000 souls) could produce 999,999,999 souls for each of the two characters. In turn, the duplication of souls allowed characters to quickly achieve the maximum Soul Level.

Souls

Souls Demon's Souls and Demon's Souls Remake are a form of currency and experience points in Demon's Souls. They are dropped by some enemies when they die, but can also be found as loot. Players spend souls to level up their character as well as to purchase items from merchants. Each level up requires an increasing number of souls. If the player dies however, all the souls that he's collected so far are lost, and are left at the bloodstain where he was killed. If the newly resurrected player can make it back to the bloodstain he can recover the lost souls. However, if he dies again on the way back to the bloodstain he will lose the souls permanently.

Demon's Souls

Demon's Souls in Demon's Souls and Demon's Souls Remake are materials used to trade for unlocking various upgrades and abilities, spells, as well as for crafting unique equipment. These demon's souls are obtained by defeating the various bosses of the game.

Soul Level Calculation

The amount of Souls required to level up can be modeled by the equation: y = 0.02x^3 + 3.06x^2 + 105.6x - 895 with x being the level and y (rounded to a whole number) being the amount of souls needed. This is accurate level 12 and up.

The soul levels needed increase in a pattern that repeats every 25 soul levels. Go from 1 to 5 does not require 724 souls. It requires each amount listed in column three be added to the previous one. In other words it costs, 673 + 690 + 707 + 724 or 2,794 total souls to go from 1 to 5. From Soul Level 1 to Soul Level 120 is 3,506,802 Souls.
