Vanguard is a Boss in Demon's Souls. Bosses are special enemies that feature their own arena, a large and prominent health bar with its Vanguard indicated, a variety of unique moves and abilities, an ambient boss theme, and an Archstone that appears upon their death. Most bosses appear once the player passes through a fog gate nearby.

Vanguard Location

It is the boss of the Tutorial Area. Appears as an optional boss in Shrine of Storms.

Vanguard Strategies

Video Strategies

Video strategies for this boss go here.

Melee Strategy

  • Make sure you pick off the Storm Beast and Silver Skeleton archers before engaging the Vanguard head to head. The last thing you want is an arrow or gigantic thorn in the back while you are trying to dodge the Vanguard's attack. Also, if happen to kill Vanguard and die right after by getting hit by either one you will not get your reward for killing him, and it will not respawn.

The general strategy is to get behind him, wait for the butt stomp to complete, then rush in for a few attacks. He will turn around during this, so you'll need to make your way behind him again. This sounds easy, however he refuses to move from the bottleneck he is in, and moving around while locked on to him can be annoyingly difficult. Plus, one hit from the axe and you'll likely be dead, even if it doesn't kill you outright he tends to hit you with followup attack. Rinse and repeat for as long as it takes.

Ranged Strategy

  • Simply attack the Vanguard with a ranged attack of your choice. If you're far enough away, Vanguard won't move or attack; not very challenging, but it gets the job done!

In the broken out wall beneath the annoying archer where the composite long bow is, you can stand and fire arrows at him. He won't move, the Storm Beast won't attack you, and you deal high damage, since you're pretty much right next to him.

Rubble Strategy
  • Continue through the level normally until you reach the underground passage exiting through rubble leading behind the Vanguard. Then just kill the two Storm Beasts that fly around this area so they don't shoot at you. Then simply shoot Spells1or Arrows at the Vanguard, he will notice you, but if you keep the fallen rubble between you and it, he will simply roar and occasionally swing his weapon without hitting you.
God's Wrath Strategy (New Game)
  • This is the easiest and not to mention safest way to kill the Vanguard in 4-1
You must have God's Wrath, several Fresh Spice or Old Spice and a Talisman of Beasts or Talisman of God.
  • Move through 4-1 until you get to the gateway with the two skeleton archers. Run left through the corridor, up the stairs and proceed down the broken steps to the left, towards the other archer tower. Ignore the Silver Skeleton and two archers, to the right completely.
  • Kill the two Skeletons in the room below and move up the stairs until you come face to face with the Skeleton archer. Kill him and move to the corner that would place you right above the Vanguard. Now the easy part, cast God's Wrath until he's dead. It is impossible for him and the Storm Beasts to hit you and it will probably take about six or more God's Wrath until he's dead, depending on which build you chose.
Sitting Duck Strategy
  • Exit the underground passage behind Vanguard, and go up the stairs as usual, but once you have sight of the Silver Skeleton, climb the ladder to your left. At the top, go to the side directly above the Dual-Katana Skeleton. Make sure you have less than half equip burden. At the wall facing the roof like area, run and roll at the edge. If it worked, you should be behind Vanguard on the previously unreachable roof. You are now outside his range, but close enough to target and shoot him with magic! (Just make sure you kill the mantas)

Attacks & Counters

Attack Counter
Horizontal swing from left to right Roll to your right and land one or two attacks.
Horizontal swing from right to left Roll to your left and land one or two attacks.
Overhead swing, once performed the axe stays stuck in the ground for a few seconds. Roll to either side, you have a small window to hit him while the axe is stuck.
Lifting itself with its diminutive wings and dropping into the ground, causing AoE damage. Back away from him. Can use Spells or ranged weapons to hit it while it is on the air.

Vanguard Lore

A huge demon with grey skin covered with spikes. It has three yellow glowing eyes and a little hole that works as a nose. On its head, it has two curved horns and its mouth is covered with a row of sharp giant teeth. Inside its mouth, there are two fibers connecting the mandible with the jaw and a normal set of sharp teeth.

On its back, there are three moving spikes and a pair of wings, which can be used to lift the creature up in the air. It moves with two stocky legs and it has a large belly. It wields a giant axe which can deal high damage to the victim and can kill it with one or two swings. Using its wings, it can perform a butt stomp when the enemy is near him and its axe can't reach it.

Vanguard Notes & Trivia

  • Players first meet the Vanguard at the end of the Tutorial stage.
It will rear its ugly face again early into the Shrine of Storms.
Here you can choose to run past or, pay him his just deserves and reap the rewards.

Shortcut

  • You can use the secret door in the gate-like structure to move through the passages (near where Graverobber Blige is being held captive) to emerge behind him. This makes meleeing and ranging even easier, as he cannot get past the small pit that the shortcut emerges out into and therefore cannot reach you. Just be careful of attacks from the two circling Storm Beast.
If you have the patience and poison cloud, you can stand behind him at the left corner of the pit and cast on him. It won't draw his attention, but does take several casts.

Royalty Tip

  • Royalty is possibly the easiest character to take this tutorial boss down with. Simply circle him, roll when needed and hit him with Soul Arrow. Your Fragrant Ring will support you aptly with Mana regeneration.

Tutorial Vanguard

  • In the tutorial, Vanguard is very much like it is in 4-1, except a ranged take down is impossible and it can kill you in one hit, it also has less HP. Although it is possible to survive one hit even with light armor (tested with a recently started Wanderer) the follow-up will more than likely kill you. Because it is possible to kill even a Knight in one solid hit, the first thing you should do is remove your character's armor if your mobility is affected.
  • The first attack is probably the most difficult to survive, it may hit you and take you out as you are trying to rush behind it. After evading the first blow, begin moving around the walls of the room clockwise, so that Vanguard will rotate clockwise as well. Keep it away from the walls or else its stomping move will be unavoidable. After that, you must simply run/roll under its right arm and behind it and stay there. Hit it in the back as much as you can and stay centered, avoiding all its weapon attacks. When its feet leave the ground, roll away twice, or move backwards a bit. After killing Vanguard you get 4 Full Moon Grass, 3 Renowned Soldier's Souls, 3 Shard of Hardstone, and 3 Shard of Sharpstone in addition to a Grey Demon's Soul.

      > The first attack is probably the most difficult to survive, it may hit you and take you out as you are trying to rush behind it

Have punched dead many a Vanguard at this point. If you simply sprint behind Vanguard at the start of the fight, this attack will never hit you.
Outside of the first hit, this also works for pretty much the entire fight. The front is safe to be until you see his windup, then you want to get to the sides/back.

Back up for the stomp, otherwise, behind him is always safe, his sides should be the same (I'm not 100% if nothing can hit you at his sides just because it has never happened to me, and his moving hitbox when walking can chip you when at his sides, so I'd recommend to try and linger towards the back). The sides are important because if he becomes backed into a wall, remembering you can simply walk to the other side of him to dodge his attack helps a lot.

As for not backing him into a wall, try to remember when you are not in front of him, he will tend to move whichever direction you are facing as he repositions.

IMO it's best to not try to ever put distance between you and him in tutorial. Close the gap as soon as you enter and never let up (aside from the jump and stomp). Once there is distance, the reach of his attacks may surprise you, and you may end up having to roll through one or more attacks in trying to reapproach.

If you need to heal, just wait for a chance to heal while sticking behind him and at his sides. Ideally, heal when recovering stamina or when he is butt-stomping (if you're already out of damage radius), but it's good to keep your healthbar topped up. Even royalty class can survive a full hit of most if not all of his attacks but don't expect to do so if you are not at maximum health.

So I'm playing the remake and went through the entire tutorial area because I wanted to get the classic Fluted Helm (Iron Helm) and fought this guy. I managed my spacing, hit him a few times here and there and didn't get hit for the entire fight, even managing to get him down to one hit left. Then he pulls a funny sweep attack that somehow hit me knocking me down and a second one right after that killed me. I can't delete this character because it's the PS5 and the chimpanzees working at Sony still haven't figured out how to separate save files from all save data so I'm stuck with this character now, unless I decide to delete my favorite character.

Great boss fight tho 10/10 hahaha (I laughed with so much anger like an insane person)

Getting killed while fighting this guy seems like a better way to die than getting punched in the back while trying to flee...

Just beat him for the first time. He's honestly pretty easy, even in regular NG. His attacks are slow and predictable, and it's easy to get behind him. The only truly challenging thing about this boss is that you have to beat him on your first attempt.

I can’t f***ing believe Bluepoint Games decided to make this guy one-shot you, and then spawn you in a totally different area! Real f***ing idiots over there, making this boss unkillable!

Was hoping for an actual boss fight to get proper revenge, not him standing there in open staring at me while I leisurely pelt him with arrows to death.

After tutorial boss defeat. There is some helmet too. Immediately where you spawn after dead body hidden side of first steps.

If you die to him in the Tutorial and are teleported to The Nexus, is it possible to return to the Tutorial Area and fight him again?
